FAREWELL IAIN MCNICOL
I’m passionate about socialism, technology and democracy and its fair to say that I’ve seriously disagreed with Iain McNicol on many issues in recent years, BUT, I recognise his long shift in a tough job and I am grateful and respectful for that.
McNicol’s tenure existed somewhere between the original + modern day version of the ‘King Canute and the Tide’ story. I met him a couple of times. A genuine person who felt crushed by opposing sides of the party. He believed he was doing the right thing at the right time (even though he wasn’t). Seems he’s realised it’s history that is crushing him.
Unbelievably GREAT WAVES 🌊🌊🌊🌊 have crashed down on the labour movement these last couple of years or so and not everyone can surf like Jeremy Corbyn + John McDonnell.
He’s now taken the right decision — to step aside in a calm and orderly fashion. Many don’t. Those who cling to power beyond their time, inflict the most harm. It’s not just a big moment in Iain McNicol’s life, it’s a big moment in the history of the Labour Party. Gratitude Iain.
I’m less worried about how his replacement is selected so long as it’s a woman, who is able to work transparently and reflect the hopes of the membership.
Let’s thank those who step out of the way of history respectfully, for their service and focus on proving our own worth. Iain had big boots, which we have to fill by making our GREAT WAVES 🌊🌊🌊🌊 crash down on the wider electorate. Only a Labour general election victory, on the terms of the manifesto will absolutely prove that Iain’s decision to step down was the right one.
Can we do it? I think so, but the Tories are not going to give way cheaply and beatable is not the same as beaten.
